Maroon Church

St. John's Maroon Church, pictured above, is one of Sierra Leone's oldest churches. It was built in the early 1800's by freed slaves that had returned from the Americas.

Shared History

Sierra Leone was once the home of some of the largest slave ports on the continent. It seems fitting that the country's capitol of Freetown was settled by waves of freed slaves returning to Africa. The city has a proud history of freedom and learning and was once known as the "Athens of West Africa." Begin your journey of Sierra Leone with an exploration of the history, heritage and culture that connects this beautiful country with the Americas.

Natural Beauty

After exploring Freetown and its surrounding areas set out to discover Sierra Leone's rainforests and beaches. On this safari you will visit with the chimps at Tacugama Sanctuary, frolic in the waters at Charlotte Falls, seek out the rare pigmy hippo in Outamba Kilmi and soak up the sounds of the ocean at Mama Beach.
